Broken Hill Art Exchange works with artists to offer artist residencies that include discounted accommodation, networking and collaboration opportunities with other artists. Workshop, gallery and exhibition spaces available. Read on to find out more

Accommodation
Join us at The Grand
an 1880s hotel
- retasked and rich in history -
right in the heart of the city!
There are a variety of rooms available. Each room has a correlating work room, about the size of a single room.
The Single, Dorm and Queen rooms have access to a communal Kitchen and Loungeroom as well as Bathroom facilities.
We have a Gallery space and Studios in our courtyard, charged separately.
The accommodation is simple and economical - you’ll get value for your money (with reduced rates for members), have easy access to the city centre, and be connected to other artists and performers!

WInter/Spring REsidency 2025
Applications Now Open
As well as our usual residencies, we plan to offer a two week creative development residency during August/September 2025. Open to First Nation and early career artists. Four artists will be selected based on desire to engage with Broken Hill. Artist accommodation and studio space provided free. This is an opportunity to meet with local artists and experience a guided tours on country. Artists must present either an artist talk, open studio or workshop as part of their residency. All creative practices welcome.

About the Winter /Spring Residency 2025. To date we have not received the funding we were expecting but the committee has decided to offer four residencies with free accommodation.
Please complete the usual application for artist in residence with the heading Winter residency. Applications close 5th May.
Winter/Spring Residency provides you with 2 weeks free accommodation at the Grand run by BHAE , use of a studio space and access to the Heritage Gallery for workshops. We can arrange transport for you around town and out onto the land if needed with one of our enthusiastic volunteers.
Dates for Winter/Spring Residency 2025 are between 20th August and 20th September. Once accepted you can book anytime between these dates and can stay for a longer period at your own cost if you wish.
Please make sure that you become a member of the BHAE, it is a requirement of our insurance policy that all who stay in the Grand are members of our association. $25 for 12 months Membership here.
Your accommodation does not include food or transport to and from Broken HIll.
As part of the residency you are required to run a workshop (at least 2 hours) , OR hold an open studio, OR give a talk about your work. I will chat with each of you re scheduling and find out what you need etc when the time comes. Participants pay a small fee $15-25 for BHAE
The selection process will occur in mid May and you will be notified of your success 20th May.
Some things to know about the Broken Hill Art Exchange - we are a small entirely voluntary run organisation, we have no paid worker. The building is old , all rooms are on the first floor ( please contact us if accessibility is a concern), there is no lift and it's cold in Broken Hill In August .
